Unwind – Fiber Arts Club

January 28, 2016 Posted by Amanda Ghantous Event, Feature, Graduate Work, Initiatives, Undergraduate Work

The Unwind Fiber Arts Club, originally called the UWSA Knitting Club, was started in Fall 2014 by a group of graduate students who shared a passion for knitting and an interest in learning new textile crafts and techniques. In Winter 2015, Unwind organized and ran a felting workshop where participants learned how to make exfoliating felted soap using alpaca fleece, llama fleece, and soap which they were able to take home afterwards. Following the success of the felting workshop, Unwind was able to secure funding from the SWAG Student Initiatives Fund in Spring 2015 for a shibori dyeing workshop. Shibori is a Japanese style of tie-dyeing that uses various folding, pressing, clipping and tying techniques to create different shapes and patterns. Due to the popularity of the first workshop, a second shibori workshop was offered in Fall 2015. Unwind is currently looking to expand its knowledge of textile crafts and would love to learn more about the fiber talent at UWSA so if you have a skill that you’d like to share (ie. leather working, bookbinding, embroidery etc.) then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us through our Facebook page and we will use all of our resources and experience to help make your workshop happen!
