On March 9th, a team of 1B students from the UWSA travelled to Conestoga Mall to participate in the annual CANstruction competition. This year, a total of fourteen teams from the Kitchener and Waterloo region participated in the event. Customary to the competition, each team was to chose a concept, plan and design the installation, and build it out of non-perishable food items.
The original concept developed by the UWSA team was an Easter Island head. Planning and design took place for about two weeks prior to the event, using Rhino as a 3D modelling tool. However, upon arrival at the mall and inspection of the food items, the team realized that the wrong cans were delivered for the sculpture. Within ten minutes they had made the quick decision to do a complete redesign, and built instead Foster + Partner’s Swiss Re Building (aka ‘The Gherkin’) in London.
The UWSA team received an Honourable Mention in the CANstruction competition, and donated a total of 1504 cans to help feed around 800 families in need living within the Kitchener and Waterloo region.
