Kelly Shannon of the Oslo School of Architecture will be kicking off the winter term of the 2013-2014 Arriscraft Lecture Series with a lecture entitled:
“Interplays: Policy, Politics, and Design” this Thursday, January 16, 2014 at 6:45pm in the main lecture theatre.

Kelly Shannon is Professor at the Institute of Urbanism and Landscape, Oslo School of Architecture and Design (Norway) and part-time Professor at the Department of Architecture, Urbanism and Planning, University of Leuven (Belgium). Her research is at the intersection of analysis, interpretative mapping and new cartographies and design. Most of her work focuses on the evolving relation of landscape, infrastructure and urbanization in Asia. A particular interested focuses development of landscape urbanism strategies that work with water and topography. She has been a guest professor at University of Colorado in Denver, ESARQ in Barcelona, PekingUniversity in Beijing and the GSD, HarvardUniversity in Cambridge. She received her first professional architecture degree from Carnegie-MellonUniversity (1988) and post-graduate masters from the Berlage Institute (1994). In 2004, she obtained her PhD with a dissertation entitled Rhetorics and Realities: Addressing Landscape Urbanism, ThreeCities in Vietnam.
Shannon is a registered architect in New York and before entering academia, Shannon worked with Hunt Thompson (London), Mitchell Giurgola Architects (New York), Renzo Piano Building Workshop (Genoa) and Gigantes Zenghelis (Athens). She has led major urban design projects including the new masterplan for Ca Mau (in progress, Vietnam), Cantho (2010, Vietnam), Banjamarsin (2009, Indonesia), Hiep Phuoc (2008, HCMC, Vietnam) and Vinh (2004, Vietnam). She is co-editor (with Bruno De Meulder) of Explorations of/in Urbanism and UFO, two book series previously published with SUN (Amsterdam) and which are now one series, UFO: Explorations of Urbanism, published by Park Books (Zurich). In 2010, she co-authored (with Marcel Smets) The Landscape of Contemporary Infrastructure, published by NAi Rotterdam. She is also one of the article editors of JoLA (Journal of Landscape Architetcure) since 2010. Shannon was the 2012 Keynote speaker at Urban Specifics – Resilient Cities in the Making, the 7th International Workshop Conference, held at LundUniversity in Sweden.
