EXHIBITING ARCHITECTURE OPPORTUNITIES for INVENTION is a symposium discussing creative approaches to curating exhibitions and installations that will happen on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 in the Main Lecture Hall at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture from 1:30 to 8:00 pm.
Two related panels, [INSIDE] OUTSIDE, will be followed by an evening keynote in the Main Lecture Hall. This post features the three speakers of the late-afternoon OUTSIDE panel. 4:00 – 6:00 pm OUTSIDE explores how exhibitions and installations can reach out to the wider community, to engage the public in important conversations. How do we instigate interest and participation from a general audience?
Annabel Vaughan, Centre for City Ecology – TBA
Annabel Vaughan is currently the Interim Director of the Centre for City Ecology. She is trained as an architect and is the Principal of publicLAB RESEARCH + DESIGN. Her interests explore the role architecture plays in the cultural production of the city. She has designed, built, curated, written, and presented ideas that explore the impact of architecture on the public realm, public art, historical practices of cities and on the community’s role in civic engagement. She has taught design studios at the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture UBC and guest lectured at SFU and Emily Carr University of Art + Design. She has written on contemporary art and the public realm and been published in catalogues, academic journals and essay collections. Her work has been exhibited at Centre A, Artspeak, Presentation House, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and The Other Gallery in Banff.
Lisa Hirmer, DodoLab – “Conversation + Other Schemes”
Lisa Hirmer is an artist, writer and designer based in Guelph, Canada. She is a graduate of the University of Waterloo School of Architecture with a Bachelors of Architectural Studies (2005) and a Masters of Architecture (2009). She is the co-founder and current principal of DodoLab, an experimental creative practice that engages and responds to the public’s relationship with contemporary issues. Her work has been commissioned and exhibited across Canada, in Europe and in the UK.
Maiko Tanaka, InterAccess – TBA
Maiko Tanaka is curator of Public Programs at InterAccess and has been developing curatorial projects exploring art, cultural politics and apparatuses of everyday life since receiving her BFA from OCAD in 2006. She has held curatorial positions with the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Casco—Office for Art, Design and Theory in Utrecht and produced numerous independent curatorial projects. Maiko recently completed a Master’s of Visual Studies from the University of Toronto. In 2013, she wrote a column for FUSE magazine on the political economy of public programming in contemporary art. These days Maiko is co-editing the publication, The Grand Domestic Revolution Handbook with Binna Choi and is co-developing workshops, a screening series, new artworks and a publication around the problematic concept of the “Model Minority” as a member of Gendai Gallery’s board and programming committee.
