Brussels took me by surprise. Like any great city, what appears on the surface to the zealous tourist is only a cover for a vast depth of bizarre and unique character. I found myself there after accepting an internship at
Taktyk Landscape Urbanism, a young office with a small team doing projects in Belgium and France. The European Union capital appeared at first to be like most other Euro-tourist destinations, but between the historical monuments and among the neon-lit restaurants all catering to foreigners in search of the authentic, is hidden a silly, quirky little city that never takes itself too seriously. While the notorious and much-loved pissing boy statue, often adorned in costume, might allude to the unique nature of Brussels, it is only just the beginning.
Brussels also known as Brussel or Bruxelles, is situated in the Flemish north but routed in French history while simultaneously functioning as the EU Capitol resulting in a confluence of languages and identities. The presence of the European Union draws a diverse range of people from across the continent giving it a deeply multi-cultural persona. The birthplace of Tintin comics and Art Nouveau architecture, the city continues to be a place of creativity and self-expression with a vibrant counter-culture. With the constantly flowing tides of interns at the EU and the increasing volume of immigrants and new comers, Brussels is a dynamic city under perpetual change. For me, Brussels embracement of diversity and adaptability is what made it exciting, why I enjoyed calling it home even for a moment. At its current rate of change, should I ever return, I’m certain it would look quite different.

CULTURAL GEMS
CINEMATEK – Screenings of obscure films for a few euros. If you’re lucky, it will be accompanied by like piano.
BOZAR – I spent many afternoons here. Just go, there’s always something or someone interesting to see
WEILS – Brewery turned museum. Worth a visit for both the building and the art.
RECYCLART – Train runs overhead while art shows, lectures, concerts and parties happen below. Skatepark on top.
EAT AND DRINK, THEN DRINK SOME MORE
Belgium is known for fries, waffles, chocolate and beer. While the food is decadent, the beer is much better so let’s focus most of our time on that, I did. Light fruity wheat beers, dark rich trippels, and the infamous pink elephant, Delirium, there is much to choose from.
MOROCCAN PANCAKES @ Gare du Midi Sunday Market – If you eat nothing else while in Brussels, eat one of these.
TOUKOUL – Ethiopian food, beyond delicious. Share a platter with good people.
BARBETON – Brussels has many good coffee shops turned bars at night. This is one of them.
