Unsilent Night | Winter Canopy

November 19, 2014 Posted by Irena Jenei Community, Event, Undergraduate Work, Work

Every December, a crowd moves through the snowy streets of Cambridge carrying a cassette, CD, or MP3 for the annual event, Unsilent Night. Each person carries a boombox or sound amplifying device playing one of four tracks specially composed by Phil Kline for the event. Together they play the music simultaneously while walking along a predetermined path. The combination of the tracks create a special soundscape, with light and art installations along the way bringing together music, art, and architecture.

This year, our school has the opportunity to connect to the community through Cambridge’s own Unsilent Night by creating our own installation for the BRIDGE Storefront located at 37 Main St. On the outside facade, netting will be draped over the building to support glinting silver spray-painted branches and transparent plastic icicles. Light projecting onto the facade will bounce off the hanging elements and create beautiful shadows.

The netting will continue into the indoor space, creating an undulating canopy of branches and icicles that hover over a PVC pipe Christmas tree. We will need plenty of hands to help us build the installation for the event on 11th of December.

If you are interested in helping out in the building process please contact us! If you’re interested to learn more, join us for our weekly BRIDGE Meetings on Thursdays at 6pm in the loft.

THESIS: Render Authenticity

Sep 11, 2015

Prianka Smita will defend her thesis "Render Authenticity" on Tuesday September 15 at 6:30 PM at the BRIDGE Centre for Architecture + Design. Her thesis examines the rich history and unique culture of the Shakhari Bazar and proposes to instigate a healthy and informed dialogue to create a common goal of sustainable micro economy that refuses to accept uniformity and the disappearance of memory.

THESIS: Cauldron of Forces: Designing a Lightning Observatory on Lake Maracaibo

May 12, 2018

Samuel Ganton's thesis wrestles with the complexity of the Maracaibo Basin through storytelling and design. Through the speculative design of a thunderstorm observatory sited near the epicentre of the Catatumbo Lightning, it asks: what kind of architecture might participate in cycles of transience and change, rather than obscuring them? How might architecture extend sensory perception and become an instrument for connecting humans more completely to the storm that is our world?
