PLANETERRAEUM: F_RMlab at Nuit Blanche 2014

January 26, 2015 Posted by Siobhan Allman Community, Graduate Work, Initiatives, Undergraduate Work, Work

From February to October of 2014, a small group of students from the F_RMlab research group at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture worked to produce an 8-meter geodesic dome whose interior was then covered with video projections captured from an airborne camera. The airborne view captured by the camera shows urban development as the shared construction and solidified efforts of generations of people from a perspective the average pedestrian would not have access to. Planeterraeum (nicknamed DomeDome) appeared in the Nuit Blanche all-night art event in Toronto this past October.

The Ontario Science Centre recently approached the team and asked to house the installation for a two month period of time (Go Waterloo! Go!). Nothing is absolutely confirmed as of this article, but the team is planning on installing in April.

The Planetarium team also produced a handbook in efforts to document their experience with Nuit Blanche and provide a platform for any team developing their own submissions. The book outlines budget, project timeline, construction and exhibition.

“We approached the dome as an exercise, as a small study on process and execution rather than a refined design project. We were curious as to what this kind of project might entail, and were interested to see what a group of relatively inexperienced but very curious students could create,” explains team member Jake Read.
