For a week, the building crowds with hopeful candidates, alongside their supportive friends and families. The current students at Waterloo Architecture recognize that there is no right way to go about the interview, and in turn, have decided to share their own personal and unique stories.
It’s admissions interview week at Waterloo Architecture, and the 1B’s are looking back at one year ago, when they were nervous hopeful applicants trying to show their best, most creative sides. I asked some students what the funniest and most memorable moments of their interviews were.
I told them my favourite book was ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’ by Viktor Frankl because I having a mid-life crisis at the time. One of the professors said something like, “Honey, you’re too young to have a mid-life crisis!”
-Riling
Someone asked me if the floor in the school was the same one they used in the silk mill or not. I don’t remember what I answered. It was a weird question.
-Sparsh
They asked me, “Why architecture?” because I was talking so much about movies.
-Marco
I referenced Frank Gehry and The Simpsons.
-Aurora
One of the interviewers turned out to live on the same street as I did! They also told me they loved my bird sketches.
-Derrick
I said I loved to cut the grass, and one of the professors interviewing me thought that it was a drug reference until I clarified that it wasn’t. We then bonded over loving to mow the lawn… not taking drugs.
-Garrett
As I was moving from my paintings to music, someone said, “So, painting obviously isn’t your forte.”
-Ben
I built a giant popsicle and named it Paul. So they asked why I named it Paul.
-Daniel
We were talking about sustainability and design, and they asked me who my favourite architect was, and I said, “Uh, well I watched ‘Abstract’ like three days ago, so Bjarke Ingels.”
-Christa
I remember walking in and thinking it was just going to be a conversation. So I shook hands, put my stuff up, and they said, “Alright, walk us through your work.” And I blacked out and I don’t remember anything else that happened!
-Silja
They looked at my pictures from my France trip, and asked me what the architecture was like there, and I said, “Very French.”
-Mickayla
One of the professors asked me for advice on how to manage insomnia.
-Ryan
They asked me who my favourite architect was and I said Frank Gehry because he was the only architect I knew.
-Paulina
I was talking about an experiment that someone did on some students, so they asked me why I thought psychologists would experiment on students like that. It was a question I got really stuck on and still think about!
-Andrew
And finally, someone pointed out that the interesting parts of the interview don’t end that week.
During the school year, I met the third-year student who interviewed me. After, it suddenly clicked that he was the one who had interviewed me! It brought back good memories.
