BRIDGE had a conversation with alumnus Aidan Mitchelmore about design studio.
In conjunction with Waterloo Architecture’s 50th Anniversary lecture series and exhibition, several student initiatives hosted a lunchtime conversation series at the Design at Riverside gallery.
Following the theme of Questioning the Canon, the conversation series invited alumni and guests to address the overarching question: In a world of unprecedented possibilities and unforeseen brutalities, what can architectural education do?
The series was structured around Waterloo Architecture’s six areas of architectural pedagogy. BRIDGE had the opportunity to talk to alumnus Aidan Mitchelmore about the design studio stream.

Aidan Mitchelmore
Aidan Mitchelmore is a registered intern architect and alumni at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Aidan received his Bachelor of Architectural Studies (2014) and Masters of Architecture (2017) from the University of Waterloo School of Architecture.
During his two years in Waterloo’s M.Arch program, Aidan was interested in using physical models as tools for design, rather than solely for representation purposes. Through the process of designing a speculative proposition for a new public (and counter-public) space within Toronto’s Union Station, Aidan has developed an interest in large public and cultural buildings as well as architectural sites located in urban networks.
With previous work experience in Australia and the U.K., he is now working in Toronto as an Intern Architect pursuing his architecture license. Currently, he plans to gain experience designing buildings with an urban, public, and social focus while practicing at architectural design offices.
