Olivera’s 3B project the Pleasure Pantry takes a pantry – a boring, benign, left-over bit of space in a catalogue home and turns it into something magic.
Monday and Thursday are studio days. On these days in particular, the third floor undergraduate studio is filled with a frenetic energy of design, research, and exploration. Students can usually be found talking excitedly with design professors and classmates in a habitat saturated with trace sketches, study models, and empty coffee cups. Every week we’ll share a completed project, churned out from this energetic studio environment.

11:37 pm
It’s Tuesday night. You’re in bed, scrolling aimlessly on your phone, when a glint catches your eye. No, no, never mind that, not now… it’s too late. You should be fast asleep already. Big meeting tomorrow. *glint* Big day tomorrow. *glint* There’s no time for that. *glint*, *glint*
11:41 pm
I mean you’re not even that hungry. Not hungry at all. *glint* Okay, maybe a little. Just hungry enough for a little snack. Something to help you sleep. *glint* Stop that tummy from grumbling. Oh god, it’s really grumbling. *glint*. And gurgling? Hey – how’d you get to the hallway? *glint* I thought you were in bed just a moment ago. *glint* On your way to the kitchen… No, no, of course not… You know exactly what you want.
11:43 pm
Round the corner and…*creak* Down the stairs you go. *creak*, *creak*, *creak*, creak*. Mmmm. A pinky glow in a dark basement. *glint* You left the light on again. But that was only a few hours ago. Just after dinner… Naughty, naughty…
But who’s going to tell?
11:45 pm
Alright, up you go now. *glint* Quick, fast, up the ladder.
But don’t stay for too long!
You need to get some sleep tonight!
Big day tomorrow!
Don’t forget about the meeting!
“Yeah, yeah, yeah…”
The Pleasure Pantry is exactly what its name reveals – a pantry for pleasure.
This project takes a pantry – a boring, benign, left-over bit of space in a catalogue home and turns it into something magic. A playroom for adults. Suspended in between the layers of a house, it is both in-the-way and out-of-the-way. Its reflective exterior bursts through walls and oozes out into other spaces to tempt you in. Entering, however, is an experience on its own. The pantry, although located primarily on the first floor, must be entered through the basement – a journey into the darkness to find the light.
This pantry abandons all preconceived notions and ideas of a pantry. Sturdy, rectilinear shelves are swapped out with füd sacs. These hollow, translucent, vinyl sacks hang from the ceiling and walls and sprout up out of the floor, coating the entire interior in a thick layer of pink plastic. The füd sac interiors may be filled with spray foam to transform them into seating and make-shift step ladders on the floor of the space. Their hollowed-out interior may also feature a light bulb, turning it into concealed overhead lighting on the ceiling.
The multiplication of a singular element, along with the reflectivity of the inner chrome shell, aims to confuse the senses, in order to transport one into a world of candy-coated pleasure and fleshy, sparkling dreams. Here, the sensuality of food is celebrated, and cravings are given a space in which to flourish. Embrace gluttony, indulgence, perversion and sensuality in this space. It has been carefully crafted just for you. Experience it alone for maximum satisfaction.
Come have a snack in the Pleasure Pantry. It won’t bite.
