The Galt Collegiate Institute’s Community Amphitheatre is an outdoor 400+ person theatre, located just behind the school, facing the Grand River. It has accommodated a variety of events ranging from music festivals, art shows, and movie filming to weddings, and for many in the school community, it is a hidden treasure. The school board is planning to demolish this theatre, so the local community is working to raise awareness in order to preserve it for years to come.

If you are interested in joining the conversation, there will be a UWSA meeting with fellow community members at 5:30PM on Tuesday, May 14  in the loft to discuss Waterloo Architecture’s future plans for involvement with this cause. As architects, we need to engage with these discussions on the future of public space in our own community, and bring a unique perspective on the necessity of such projects.

Hope to see you there!

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:

The WRDSB will be hosting a Public Meeting where the community will be discussing the future of the GCI Community Amphitheatre.

In his thesis, Tristan looks at the social changes implied by a digital culture in architecture and the impacts of this relationship in spatial notions of the contemporary North American public realm. He investigates the changes caused by the privatization of public space and the introduction of ubiquitous mobile computing (and accompanying social networks) and puts forth sets of design proposals. Tristan will defend his thesis on Monday December 14, 2015 at 1:00pm at the BRIDGE Centre for Architecture + Design.
