On Saturday, November 28 at 3:00 pm, BRIDGE in collaboration with 50×30 Waterloo Region is hosting an exciting virtual visualization workshop for a just, low-carbon Waterloo Region. University of Waterloo students and local residents are invited to imagine imperative changes to help us move towards a climate-friendly, socially just future.
How will we do this?
At Imagining a Just, Green Waterloo Region, digital cutouts will be provided to collage onto specific street scenes at key locations throughout the city like in a sticker book. We will work together on a user-friendly online platform to focus on how to ‘green’ this region. Moderators in Zoom breakout rooms will facilitate conversation and aid in using online collaging tools. Through the event, we hope to forge new connections between designers and residents so we can take action against the climate crisis now. UWSA students, this is your chance to put your knowledge and technical expertise to good use!
What is 50×30?
50x30WR is a campaign to reduce 50% of carbon emissions by 2030. According to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), if we are to stay within the 1.5°C of warming, we need to decrease our emissions by 50% in the next 10 years. During the event, we want to see your thoughts on this plan.
“50x30WR is a grassroots, community-led campaign advocating for Waterloo Region to commit to a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030, in line with the imperatives of climate science and centering social justice and well-being. This campaign builds on the public commitment made by regional municipalities in 2019 by declaring a climate emergency, recognizing the existential risks posed by climate change globally and here in Waterloo Region. This emergency, like the pandemic, is already impacting public health and well-being and demands our shared urgency and attention. 50x30WR aims to build back better from the COVID-19 pandemic through a just, green recovery that centers human well-being and innovation, building towards a socially just, sustainable and climate-smart Waterloo Region together.”

Canada is known to be one of the top global carbon emitters, per capita we are amongst the top three carbon-emitting countries. Knowing it is imperative that we take action now, what steps can we take in the region? What can municipalities, councilors and residents do?
