CALL FOR SUBMISSION / Missing Pages: An Alternative Archive

June 11, 2021 Posted by BRIDGE and Idea Exchange Articles, Call for Submissions, Community, Competition, Event

Submission deadline: August 27, 2021

In September 2021, BRIDGE Centre for Architecture + Design and Cambridge Art Galleries | Idea Exchange will present Missing Pages, a community-centric project that makes space for voices that are underrepresented in our institutions. Existing public catalogues of stories — whether an archive, a university, or a library — are intended to tell us who we are. And yet, they undoubtedly omit and exclude certain experiences and forms of knowledge. Missing Pages presents a series of online artworks and public programs that focus on personal and collective narratives that shape our communities, both locally and internationally, bringing light to the stories that are missing from collected records.

In conjunction with Missing Pages, BRIDGE Centre for Architecture + Design invites design students to propose a pavilion, archive, or platform to house those missing narratives. The proposed space, sited as you see fit, may be a place to experience, to share, or to preserve stories.

Selected projects will be published online as part of a student design exhibition concurrent with the community-centric project. Given the current Covid-19 restrictions, we cannot confirm whether we will be able to have a physical exhibition. In the event that this is possible, we will display the selected works at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. These works will also be shared in a zine in collaboration with galt., a student-run peer-reviewed publication from the University of Waterloo School of Architecture.

Design Submission Requirements:

  • Limit the project dimensions to a maximum of 10 meters x 10 meters
  • A digital model that could be displayed on Mozilla Hubs or images depicting the space
  • 200 word description
  • One image describing the concept
  • Submit one landscape 11”x17” PDF

We are open to other modes of responding to the call. We welcome submissions that respond to the design call through text, drawing, art, etc.

Creative Submission Requirements:

  • Limit text submissions to 2000 words, with author-date Chicago citations if applicable
  • Other works should be submitted as one landscape 11”x17” PDF

Email any questions to bridge@waterlooarchitecture.com

Email your final submission to bridge@waterlooarchitecture.com by August 27, 2021.
