ABSTRACT by Andrea Murphy: There are over one thousand closed ‘small’ landfills in Ontario, each with differing circumstances and potential problems. This project proposes a method of addressing such dormant sites in situ, based upon a case study in Hamilton. Of the four closed landfills within Hamilton city limits, three of them lie in the low lands of the Red Hill Creek Valley. Perched at the source of the Red Hill Creek, the Upper Ottawa...

Sam Oswald discusses the design collaborative Boko with founder Adam Schwartzentruber, and learns about new ways to engage our environment. I am driving with Adam Schwartzentruber from Cambridge to his family’s farm near Wellesley, Ontario. He has been telling me about the items offered by his design collaborative, Boko. Boko is currently run by him and his fiancée, Stephanie Boutari. Their reclaimed-timber benches, cards, and whimsical notebooks are slowly gaining popularity both online and at the Arts Market...
If you’ve seen a couple of masters students laser cutting endless rolls of mylar and/or playing with arduinos, motors and a bunch of wiring in the past month, you may know F_RMlab has been busy preparing for an installation at GrowOp. GrowOp is an exhibition at the Gladstone Hotel that celebrates innovative ideas and conceptual responses to landscape and place across a broad range of creative practices. The event will run from April 25-28, with...
In The Human Condition, Hannah Arendt outlines three fundamental human activities: labour, work, and action. Labour represents the basic, cyclical activities that are necessary for survival. Work is what we are normally concerned with, as architects: the fabrication of a durable, objective world. But action, according to Arendt, is what distinguishes human life. Freedom of speech, initiative, and dialogue allow each individual to act – to discover how to live as a human among humans....

On Thursday, April 11, and Friday, April 12, final reviews were held for the 1B Class. The project brief called for students to design a residential loft building for one of three different sites in downtown Toronto. The variety in sizes and locations of the sites called for very different design solutions, as indicated by the results produced by students. Excerpts of some of the student’s design work can be viewed at the Design at...
On Friday, April 5th, several students met with David Gibson, the developer of the gallery space. He is incredibly interested in vitalizing the downtown, and in recreating old spaces – giving them new life with new activities. He also wants to demonstrate that private development and public institutions can work together productively to create change. The New Proposal: As David wants the project to move forward as quickly as possible, he is giving BRIDGE...
On Thursday March 13, the students of the UWSA showcased yet another facet of their talent. Performers and spectators from the undergraduate and graduate programs of the architecture school enjoyed a night of music and burritos at the Mi Casa es tu Casa Mexican Restaurant in downtown Cambridge for this term’s installment of the Coffee House. Like always, the event was a great success. If you were unfortunate enough to miss it, scroll down for a selection...
Studio Soundtrack features five songs selected by a student at the UWSA. These tunes are great—sometimes white noise is even better. With good headphones it can sound like you are in a giant vacuum, but hey! when everyone else is on some crazy 3 a.m. caffeine bender, that’s not necessarily a bad thing… If white noise just isn’t for you, take a listen to this week’s song picks instead: Darkstar – Dear Heartbeat Beach House...
