Monday and Thursday are studio days. On these days in particular, the third floor undergraduate studio is filled with a frenetic energy of design, research and exploration. Students can usually be found talking excitedly with design professors and classmates in a habitat saturated with trace sketches, study models and empty coffee cups. Every Monday we’ll share a completed project, churned out from this energetic studio environment. Arch 293 / Lola Sheppard studio coordinator Species, Spaces Territories...
All are welcome to attend the opening of the exhibit “Re-visioning Toronto Island Airport” at Urban Space Gallery 401 Richmond St. West Toronto on September 17 from 6 to 8pm. The projects were produced in the Architectural Instincts and Imagination 3B option studio between 2009 and 2012 and will run from September 17 to October 25. The exhibition coincides with the Toronto city council vote on whether or not to extend the Billy Bishop Airport runways. Hope...
Enter the School of Architecture and you may notice a subtle, black demarcation on the floor of the atrium. Traverse the stairs and you’ll find another precise curvature slicing through the second floor student lounge. Taehyung Kim is responsible for these contours, entitled Insertion which serve as a testing ground for his masters thesis. His investigations surround our phenomenological experience of space and in particular, challenge notions of ‘framing’ as discussed in architecture. For this particular work...
I was fortunate enough to be photographing The Stop’s Night Market for the second year in a row. It was a night of all my favourite things, food, drinks, laughter and great companies. Of course it was not a surprise to bump into so many familiar faces during the two nights of the event as we know that a lot of people from the UWSA community were involved in building the carts and coordinating the event. The...

15,000 Rosaries is one of nine room installations at the Gladstone Hotel’s 10th Annual Come Up to My Room (CUTMR) Event, open this weekend as part of the Toronto Design Offsite Festival. UWSA students Shane Neill and Virginia Fernandez comprise 2 of the 3 part non-profit art collaborative Fictional Territories. 15,000 Rosaries Traditions contain within themselves latent opportunities to undermine the totalizing forces of globalization; that which is freely given over can be incomparably more...
Two 3B chair projects will be featured at the Gladstone Hotel’s 10th Annual Come Up to My Room (CUTMR) Event: a chair for Jorge Luis Borges by Aidan Mitchelmore and Andrew Ashbury and a chair for Jiro Ono by Haley Zhou and Lauren Tom. In both cases, digital fabrication made the designs possible. The poetry and short stories of Jorge Luis Borges are often driven by complex philosophical themes such as labyrinths, dreams, recursion,...
