As a part of their course curriculum for Arch 226: Environmental Building Design, the 2A class of Fall 2012 competed in the “Evolve: Sustainable Design Competition” sponsored by RBC and B + H Architects for architecture and engineering students in Canada.
Challenging architecture and engineering students to work together in multi-discliplinary teams, the competition brief called for the design of a net-zero energy and water-wise bank branch that aims to explore its design and function. With high emphasis on sustainable design and developed ways to minimize energy and water usage, the competition also asks for students to explore how sustainable building practices can be made a part of everyday life for occupants.
Of all the entries received by the jury, the team consisting of Waterloo’s Elaina Poleto, Joanne Yau, Keegan Steeper, Thomas Yuan, and Renee Hum-Hsiao emerged victorious at first place while the team of Alice Chen, Andrea Ng, Alice Song, Mina Vedut, and Alan King Bowden claimed runner-up. Both winning teams were awarded cash prizes of $5000 and $2500 respectively.
