galt. is an independent student publication from the University of Waterloo School of Architecture (UWSA). For its inaugural issue, galt. explores the process of alternating.
On June 8th, galt. held a publication launch at Bridge Center for Architecture + Design. Contributors of the issue were invited to present their submissions followed by discussions on how the work echos the theme, in an event that celebrates the collective voice of the UWSA community.
Founded by a group of students in the fall of 2017, galt. is a platform to share the work of the students of UWSA. The physical book of the first issue was presented at the launch, which contains submissions of past and present students, and conversations between the team and lecturers invited to present in the 50th anniversary lecture series ‘Questioning the Canon.’
galt.’s mission is to curate and promote all forms of creativity and expression that currently influence the student community, and broadcast this in the form of a physical print and an online presence. It is an attempt to create connections in the networks and communities across Canada and beyond, while generating discourse and establishing our unique perspective and identity within the field.
Each issue of the annual publication introduces an open-ended theme that encourages works of different mediums to contribute, the theme of the current issue is on ‘alternating.’ Throughout the design process, we make conscious decisions to curate infinite possibilities. Framing these possibilities, we create reactive forces between alternates while straddling the multi-faceted existence of any subject, object or idea. Alternating is a constant state of succession. The historical symbols of Neoclassicism propelled the reinventions in Modernism, and contesting these transformations brought about Postmodernism. This momentum of alternating generated our current line of questioning, where we constantly renew our design perspectives through a cyclical criticism of the established. The identity of UWSA is fostered through this culture of questioning, of constantly iterating and alternating.
The UWSA community was invited to the Bridge Storefront to gather in a curated exhibition, to exchange ideas and conversations, and to celebrate the launch of the student-run publication. Authors with their submissions featured in the issue were invited to present their work in more detail, and opened up the floor for further discussion.
Follow galt. on their website and Instagram, and stay tuned for updates about the theme and submission details for the next issue.
