EVENT RECAP / Truth and Reconciliation Day

100 Notebook Kickoff Event hosted by BRIDGE

On September 30th, students gathered in the loft to attend the annual Kickoff event for Inktober. In honour of Truth and Reconciliation Day, BRIDGE took inspiration from the article, “Decolonizing the Design Process with Five Indigenous Design Paradigms” by Shawn Bailey, Honoure Black and Lancelot Coar, for the event’s theme.

Per the article, we addressed the following paradigms:

  1. Da na ka mi gad: It takes place, happens in a certain place
  1. An do tan:  Listen for it; wait to hear it
  1. Ba waa ji gan:  A Dream, A Vision
  1. Meshk wad: In Turn, in Exchange
  1. Naa go toon: Make it Show, Reveal it

Based on these, we formulated the prompt,  “The land that we reside on”.

Using their notebooks from the 100 Notebooks project, students drew in the loft for an hour with their friends. BRIDGE provided free hot chocolate, and the event received a sizable turnout!

Interested in participating in Inktober? Follow the prompts found on our social media and submit your work for a chance to win a Lamy pen from Phidon. Each submission is an additional entry to the raffle. So submit more for a higher chance of success! The Kickoff event was only part 1 of the BRIDGE X Inktober series. Make sure to attend Art Battle, the final event, at the end of October for a chance to win a Lamy 50mL bottle of ink!

This fall, Paniz Moayeri and Haneen Dalla-Ali created an installation to shed light on the experiences of newcomers to Canada. Bright Whispers is a forest of lanterns, each inscribed with a different story of immigration, written in the native language of the story teller. Samuel Ganton invites us to take a closer look at the installation, and reflects on the significance of these stories for Canada and for this moment in history.
