The Computational Design Research group [http://aedasresearch.com/features/filter/computational-design] at Aedas Architects has concentrated from its inception on using computation to reveal qualities of space that can be instrumentalized for design. Different perspectives of user behaviours from design heuristics to spatial navigation are analyzed and encoded for the design process. Practical workshop demonstrations and talks will offer direct experience of working with user-centric design models and more experimental work looking at associative networks which enable autonomous representations of space. A first workshop will concentrate on urban modeling tools, including large data sets and dynamics through a workshop at the School of Architecture, University of Waterloo, running Saturday and Sunday Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, 11-5 pm. Two lectures will be presented, the first at the School of Architecture in Cambridge on Monday evening Dec.2, 7 pm followed by a second lecture at Engineering 5, Waterloo campus on Tuesday Dec. 3, 2 pm. A pair of open working meetings on Monday and Wednesday, Dec. 1 and 3 will focus on the Hylozoic Series; a group of responsive architectural environments that explore the possibilities of spaces with near-living qualities, developed through collaboration of many contributors at Waterloo Architecture, ECE and KI. Participants will work with a simulation tool that provides visualization of dynamics and interaction within an existing Hylozoic installation located at The Leonardo museum, Salt Lake City, designed to be generalizable for future design applications. The meetings will be held at the PBAI Studio, 213 Sterling Road in Toronto. Presenters Aedas is a leading international design practice, offers services in architecture, interior design, master planning, landscape, urban design and building consultancy within Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. The practice is noted for its expertise and extensive experience in the Education sector demonstrated by establishments such as Holland Park School in London, Darwen Aldrige Community Academy in Darwen and Walkden High School in Salford.
