Paths to Practice is a day long event hosted by the School of Architecture and Co-operative Education and Career Action to bring together students, professionals, faculty, and co-operative education in exploration of current Architectural practice and employment opportunities. On Wednesday October 22nd, over the course of the day there will be two panels during which practitioners from a diversity of design and architecture related fields will have a panel discussion. In the afternoon there will be the Networking Cafe where students have an opportunity to meet and speak with a range of practitioners in a more informal atmosphere. Paths to Practice is an ideal opportunity for students to gain insight into the potentials within and surrounding the field of architecture. Everyone is welcome and highly encouraged to attend! For further information, visit the Paths to Practice 2014 website.
Paths to Practice is sponsored by the Ontario Association of Architects and is supported by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada
Event Schedule
10:00 am – Morning Panel
Hans Ibelings, Architecture critic
I am not trained as an architect but the career path I have followed is one that is as easily accessible for an architect as for an architectural historian. The core of my work is writing, editing, publishing, lecturing and curating exhibitions. For me all these activities boil down to mediating and reflecting architecture. This business of mediation and reflection architecture has evolved over the last years, both becoming easier and more difficult: there are more opportunities to profess this mediation in whatever form but it pays less. There are more voices but less authority. With the transformation of the media landscape the position of the architecture critic is changing as well.
