A bit late, but worth sharing; the end of March 2013 brought Stantec Architects, and one of their current clients, Cambridge Memorial Hospital (CMH), to the Waterloo School of Architecture for a full-day design charrette with a number of undergraduate students. The focus lay in developing key public spaces and in enhancing the patient, staff, and visitor experience to the renovation and addition of the existing hospital building in Cambridge. Following a brief presentation by...
‘Unlocking the Aerial Perspective’ – an Uncovered Lecture by David Schellingerhoudt Thursday, July 4th @ 12:30pm in the MAIN LECTURE HALL I plan to give a two part presentation about my master’s thesis project ‘hack: reclaiming the commons’, focusing on the power of aerial perspective, its historic control and the implications for its universal accessibility – made possible by inexpensive remote control devices. Then I would like to offer a show and tell, as an introduction to...
ABSTRACT by Shannon Ross During the 1960s large trenched expressways were introduced into our urban centres to accommodate the booming vehicular traffic. These expressways were built on an enormous scale, often traversing entire cities. Unfortunately, some neighbourhoods have been divided and now share a noxious physical boundary. The Vine Street Expressway in Philadelphia, the Cross Bronx Expressway in New York and the Décarie Expressway in Montreal are examples of such thoroughfares. They are noisy, polluted...

I recently had the pleasure of meeting up with the amazing Timea Jakab, who is a Waterloo Architecture alumna and current adjunct professor at our school. We met in Toronto at University and Adelaide, over green tea and avocado-on-toast, where we discussed her current role as a member of the design committee in this year’s Stop’s Night Market. Timea is currently self-employed, giving her the flexibility she needs to take on an integral role...

I rode my bike through Toronto, past the architecture ghetto, over the Don Valley to the east side of the city to office of Sustainable.TO. It was founded less than five years ago by Paul Dowsett, a Waterloo Architecture alumni, and is housed in an old bank on Queen Street East. I entered the office to find him and his team immersed in a design charrette, discussing their proposal for redevelopment of the Far Rockaways....
