For many current students at UWSA, Jonathan Tyrrell and Brian Urbanik are known primarily as adjunct professors, working with the 3a and 1b classes respectively over the Winter 2013 term. What many do not know is that they are also the vocalist/guitarist and percussionist in the Ketch Harbour Wolves, a band that has been described as “at once near and distant, intimate and vast.” Their music “ranges from episodes of sprawling emotional energy to moments of cathartic stillness. Imagine the rich baritone of The National carried by Arcade Fire arrangements through a Leonard Cohen wilderness.” Yup. They are actually rock stars.
Together with fellow UWSA alumni, lead guitarist Liam Brown and multi-instrumentalist Kristjan Bergey, and with bass guitarist Scott Winter (the only guy not from Waterloo Architecture), the Ketch Habour Wolves have released two EP’s to date, 2008’s Dead Calm Horizon and Anachronisms in early 2010, each garnering the band accolades from across the Canadian music press.
Now, they are back. After several years hiatus, the Wolves (minus Bergey) are planning to release not just one album this year but three. The album release for their latest record, “Queen City: Volume One” is this Saturday April 27th at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto. Just to make it even sweeter, the band is streaming their whole album online for free until the concert.
