ALL SCHOOL MEETING

The All School Meeting, for the first time at UWSA was given by new director Dr. Ila Berman proposing goals for the future of the school and its current state of affairs.  With her degree from Carleton and a masters/doctorate from Harvard University, Ila joins us from the California College of the Arts.  One of Ila’s hopes is for the school to become a hub for global networking as well as further integrating technology into the education system – moving Waterloo’s School of Architecture into the next generation. Below is a summary of the announcements and issues raised at this term’s meeting, which took place on Thursday, January 9th at 12:30.

CO-OP:

-With an increase in work terms abroad, the goal is to make Waterloo more of an international renowned institution.
-Featuring E-Coop opportunity, to work coop term as an entrepreneur through starting a personal business.

IMPORTANT DATES:
For international employers: students must go outside the JobMine process and send emails by the end of January for the spring term.

Feb 22: First post opens
Mar 6, 10, 12: Interviews take place
Mar 7: Toronto interview day

 

LECTURE SERIES:

_ON THE LINE

-Lecture series run and organized by Don McKay featuring the urban role of public transit, which looks at architectural consequences of infrastructure.
-The first speaker is Kelly Shannon, who teaches at the Oslo school of design, on January 16th .
-Other lecturers include: Leslie Woo, Jane Farrow, Paul Hess, Susan Zielinkski, David Gerofsky, and John van Nostrand.

 

STUDENT INITIATIVES:

_BRIDGE
-Hub of student life; promote student culture
-2 tier: website and storefront (physical space and manifesto for the school; blank canvas from which student organizations run out of)
First meeting: Tuesday, January 14th at 7:00pm in the Ward Room

_F_RM Lab
-Digital research platform; exploratory zone for computational research; parametric design, interactive architecture, aggregate resources www.frmlab.com
-Graduate / thesis research posted, serving as a library of information

_SWAG (Society of Waterloo Architecture Graduates)
-Events for student body enabling intellectual exchange, help undergraduate achieve continuity between terms: first meeting next Thursday, January 16th at 1pm, Ward Room

_WA FILM CLUB
-Audio equipment in lecture hall; show movie; film collection per term

-Looking for new leadership

_Re:POST
-Regarding: Publication Opportunities (Show and Tell)
-Architecture writers/educators brought in as lecturers: show student research in school avenues and tools for disseminating projects and research in school community

_UNCOVERED LECTURE SERIES
-Adjuncts, professors, graduates: share external projects and research; ongoing

_PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB
-Use dark room for film photography, open to those without experience as well.

_GARDEN CLUB
-Student run in the back near the courtyard/terrace, contact on e-group

_MOLE MAGAZINE
-Design journal; written and edited by students; use the process of choosing a model/theme, write a brief on it then creating an open call for submissions
-Upcoming event on Tuesday, January 14th at Design at Riverside to celebrate the release of the first issue: Cute Little Things

-Feb 26: Brkt.org takes action submission for student work
-Saturday Mar 1: Open House
