This post by Geoff Christou originally appeared here. Geoff is a University of Waterloo School of Architecture graduate who recently defended his master’s thesis and currently holds a position at Toronto firm Coolearth Architecture. UWSA alumnus Craig England is also an architect at the firm, which is run by three experienced principals. Coolearth has hired UWSA students on co-op terms in the past (including yours truly) and is currently running a call for proposals for their storefront space in Toronto’s Junction neighbourhood.
Most recently, the space was transformed by interior design students from Ryerson for the fourth annual Toronto Design Offsite Festival, for which current UWSA graduate student Deborah Wang is Creative Director. If you’re interested in submitting an idea to transform this space, scroll down for further details.
Call for Installations: We are looking for current or past student(s) who are interested in using our storefront gallery at 386 Pacific Avenue to exhibit, explore, and engage the community through any media. Whether it is models and panels from a masters or undergraduate thesis, an installation from class that can be re-adapted to the space, or something site specific, we are open to all proposals. The selected exhibition/installation will be mounted for March.
Background: Located in the heart of Toronto’s Junction neighbourhood, Coolearth is a 5-person architecture firm that specializes in sustainable, quantifiable, and durable buildings. As part of our commitment to our community, as well as profession, we have a storefront and front gallery. Most recently this space played host to an installation by Ryerson Interior Design students as part of the Toronto Offsite Design Festival.
Details: Submissions should be a PDF of around five pages containing a few images, pertinent drawings (see below for drawings and photographs of space), no more than 200 words of text, a half-page work plan, and a description of the teams capacity to execute the proposal based on previous experience(s). If you are interested in swinging by the office to checkout the space, please come-by during standard business hours.
Late Submissions: if you miss the submissions deadline, submit your proposal anyways, as there are future exhibition opportunities!
Reference Material: A street elevation, plan, and three photos of the space can be found here.
Important Dates:
– Submissions open: February 10th
– Submissions close: February 21st
– Installed/Mounted: Week of February 24-28st
– De-mounted: End of March (negotiable)
Please email any questions and final submissions to Geoff at christou@coolearth.ca.
DEADLINE: FEB. 21
