Studio Soundtrack 021 – Seattle and the West Coast

March 28, 2016 Posted by Samuel Ganton Articles, Feature

Studio Soundtrack features five songs selected by a student at Waterloo Architecture. This edition comes from grad student Caelin Schneider, who spent a year between degrees living in and exploring Seattle, Washington.

This week we go West to Seattle. Things may have settled down after the heyday of the 90’s, but the Seattle sound is as alive and well as ever. When it is overcast 200 days a year you spend a lot of time sitting inside making music.

1. Kithkin – Fallen Giants

Crashing drums, rolling rhythm, Kithkin give us a sound for the end of days.

2. Tacocat – Bridge to Hawaii

A song about missing the sun: how fitting. Also of note in the video, one of the band members is picked up in front of Linda’s Tavern, the last place Kurt Cobain was seen alive.

3. Iska Dhaaf – Everybody Knows

Guitar and drums: it’s all you really need.

4. Snuff Redux – Disintegrate the Days

Another young group out of Seattle, Snuff Redux have the perfect mix of raw, lo-fi sound and melody.

5. Sleater-Kinney – Fade

Before she was Carrie in Portlandia, she was Carrie in Sleater-Kinney. Technically an Olympia, Washington, band, Sleater-Kinney are one of the largest forces to come out the 1990’s Riot Grrrl scene.
