SPOTLIGHT: Shape and Colour in Motion @ //MOVE

Graduate student Xiao Wen Xu shares photos of a mural she completed as a part of the OAA’s //MOVE: Big Installation Party.

Xiao Wen writes:

This painted mural is based on the visual perception of geometrical shapes and contrasting colours in motion. It creates apparent vibrations through juxtaposed colours and shapes. Here, Bridget Riley’s painting Movement in Squares is reinterpreted and mutated: instead of squares, diamonds and stripes are used as the stretching surface. The swells created in her painting are amplified in my mural through the use of vibrating colours and stretched shapes. The mural visually moves the viewer’s eyes towards the centre with the diamonds and stripes decreasing in size. But, as the diamonds and stripes recede, a pulsing sphere emerges in the centre. As a result, depth and flatness are created simultaneously.
