Engi-Tecture Art Show Opening Friday!

July 16, 2014 Posted by Sarah Gunawan Event, Faculty Work, Graduate Work, Undergraduate Work, Work

Engi-Tecture: Eccentricity is an art exhibition that exposes the creative pursuits of architects and engineers beyond their respective professions. Roksena Nikolova, the founder and curator of the event, aspires to bring people together to celebrate art from the point of view of architecture and engineering students, faculty members, and professionals. She says, “When we make things, we express our view of the world. The creative outcome may be painting, sculpture, illustration, printing, photography, music, dance, theatre, poetry, installation, inventions. The purpose is to create and to meet people who have an experience to share.”

Join us for the Engi-Tecture: Eccentricity exhibition opening this Friday, July 18th at 5pm! The exhibition will take place at the BRIDGE Pop-Up location at 60 Main Street in Galt, Cambridge and will be on display July 18th - 26th.

On Saturday, July 26th at 7pm join us for an official Waterloo chapter Pecha Kucha event discussing Community Initiatives! The presentations will highlight exciting initiatives taken on by students, faculty, and members of the Galt community. It will be a cash bar event held among the Engi-Tecture exhibition at 60 Main Street, Cambridge.

Nikolova was inspired by an encounter with a group of engineers in Edmonton who were creating art personally. In order to share their efforts with the community they organized an exhibition at the University of Alberta. Nikolova participated, collaborating with engineers on the casting of a concrete cup. She credits Tyler Heal with motivating her to bring the exhibition to the architects and engineers of the University of Waterloo.

Almost twenty architecture and engineering students and professionals will be exhibiting their creative work. Each artist was encouraged to interpret the topic individually and contribute work in any media.

“They are so excited about seeing peoples’ reactions to their art, which has never before been shared. Sometimes people have these amazing hidden talents; I wanted to see what is in the minds of engineers and architects beyond CAD drawings, elaborate renderings, and constant deadlines,” says Roksena. “Engineers and architects are creative people, but their art creations are rarely showcased or discussed. I would like to change that and give space and time for some sharing of imagination.”
