WORKSPACE: Yahya’s Studio Desk

February 7, 2018 Posted by Nicole Chen Articles

Riling & Nicole showcase 1B student Yahya’s homey and Insta-worthy studio desk.

The Workspace series highlights students’ workspaces ranging from studio desks and workshop benches to maker labs and co-op offices. Design happens everywhere.

Dec 18, 2017: Nicole and Riling finish their Enviro final and begin creeping on their classmate’s desks.
Dec 20, 2017: They decide to start desk of the week.
January: They procrastinate.
1 month later…
Feb 2, 2018: It begins.

At a minimum, a workspace is a place where one can work productively away from the distractions of home life. But it is rarely just that. People deck out their walls with family snapshots and artwork, or line their shelves with succulents and trinkets. A workspace can be the most telling sign of an individual’s personality. To explore this notion further, Riling and Nicole began the WORKSPACE series that aims to showcase Waterloo Architecture students’ outstanding workspaces.

The first victim, Yahya Islam from 1B was an obvious candidate.

What is your inspiration?

100 Interiors Around the World. There are two books, and they’re heavy. I haven’t read them but I’ve gone through them.

This is what my house in Dubai looked like. I never really thought about why I do my desk like this but now that I think about it, it’s because my parents are really into interior decorating. My dad especially. He really liked my desk when he came.

I keep my projects up, or at least the most recent ones. Then I like to keep my art books from my old school because there’s always inspiration and interesting things to show. Then I always have some books which I like to read for fun. That’s me—studious.

I found these letters in a garbage bin in the woodshop.

The lamp was from a garage sale in Oakville. The fan was from Dubai. I’m really disappointed though because it doesn’t work. I was going to take it apart and see. It uses USB so you can plug it in the computer.

Indigo’s homeware collection was really nice when I bought this. I wanted to get all the colours.

I wish I had more plants.

You have so many plants.

I only have 3.

That’s more than most people.

Give me a month, when it gets warmer I’ll have some more.
