Coffee House Summer 2014

Jun 19, 2014 | Posted by Samuel Ganton | Uncategorized |

More than 50 people packed the upper floor of Monigram Coffee Roasters for the Summer 2014 Coffee House on Friday. Under a full moon which we could not see, as the evening grew older and darker, a diverse set of performers and a committed and energetic audience celebrated the extraordinary non-architectural talent hidden inside our school.

Check out some photos below (photos by Stanley Sun), with authentic captions added by me, Samuel Ganton. And let me just say again that I’m truly grateful to everyone who helped out, whether by performing, setting up, or just applauding. And to Graham and Monica at Monigram, for hosting us in their lovely space.

Here, local crooner Caelin Schneider performs a heartfelt original song.

Lara Isaac and Alex Gontarz excite the crowd with the “Game of Thrones” theme.

Samuel Ganton races through some foot-stomping fiddle tunes.

Arturo and his rock band blow our minds. And ears. In a good way.

Capitano Goldstar takes a break from thesis preparation to grace us with three original tunes.

Desiree Geib and Rachel Cohen-Murison perform on uke and keys.

Here, Amina Lalor and Dennis Tang join Rachel in one of the final acts of the night.

Other performances included Mack Phillips, with extraordinary electric guitar and vocal numbers, and Sean Maciel with genuine magic tricks involving cards, music, and mysterious phone calls. ZiCheng Xu and Tim Wat were daring enough to involve the audience as percussion in their jazz set. Danielle Gignac read a selection from Peter Pan, reminding us that never growing up means missing out on much of life’s richness. And, nearly on the spur of the moment, Pooneh Bolourchi cleared the floor and wowed the crowd with some belly dancing.

Dennis then crowned the evening with a set of songs celebrating friendship and the long journey which the 2014 class has gone through together.

He also stated that “when the sky falls, when it crumbles,” we will in fact “stand tall - face it all together.”

Which I think pretty much sums that up.

Studio Soundtrack 021 - Seattle and the West Coast

Mar 28, 2016

Studio Soundtrack features five songs selected by a student at Waterloo Architecture. This week, Caelin Schneider takes us west to Seattle. Things may have settled down after the heyday of the 90's, but the Seattle sound is as alive and well as ever. When it is overcast 200 days a year, you spend a lot of time sitting inside making music.

Creative Collaboration / Twelve by Lia Tramontini

Unexpected creative collaborations often occur beyond the studio walls of the Waterloo School of Architecture. Several fourth year students recently came together to direct, film and perform "Twelve" from Lia Tramontini's debut album.
